The Wingman Foundation is near and dear to my heart since they provide immediate post-mishap support for the Navy and Marine Corps Aviation community and their families. Shortly after my husband’s mishap a fundraiser was created for the fallen families. Being overseas made the unthinkable situation even more challenging, so the contributions were tremendous in helping my kids and me with immediate expenses of relocating back to the states.
I particularly admire that this organization ensures fallen heroes are never forgotten, and families are supported through their annual 20-mile Memorial Day walk event. Due to COVID-19, a virtual event was held this year, but the families were still supported through a virtual call. We were able to share stories and just “be together” even though circumstances kept us apart.
When I was invited to join my late husband’s close friends to run the Marine Corps Marathon 10K run in 2019, I knew I wanted to give back to this organization that so generously supported my family. We created a donation page to honor our run, which far exceeded my expectations. This run was probably one of the best decisions I have made since the tragedy because it gave me a purpose in life again and honored my forever hero in a way he would have loved.
Much love and gratitude,
Erica
